Okay, I admit it: I am a fan of adventure/spy/thriller mysteries and always have been. So of course I have been lured into the web of the Baldwin/Alexiou Elite Operatives series because as a kid, I was always imagining myself in the male leads of the spy thrillers I read. Baldwin and Alexiou clearly had the same fantasy. Their fifth in the series,  Dying to Live queries: “Can you outrun death?” You’ll have to travel from small-town Italy, to Hungary, to Beijing, to Columbia, to London, to Germany to Philadelphia to Washington, D.C. to Colorado to Geneva and back to find out. Baldwin & Alexiou have established a formula for this series that works: short, staccato chapters set in different locales that unfurl the plot layer by layer and then they develop into solid chapters where the main characters—in this book, the good soldier Fetch and the spoiled brat Zoe–begin to reveal themselves. The authors manage to take two plot themes that have been done and done again, meld them, and turn them into a solid, convincing, compelling page-turner that is quite satisfying. -Victoria Brownworth, Lambdaliterary.org Dying to Live is a chest-grabbing, throat-closing, sleek, sexy, thoroughly enjoyable white-knuckle ride of a thriller. Baldwin and Alexiou prove once again their deft understanding of the genre puts them eye-to-eye with the best in the business. Buckle your seatbelts! Amanda Kyle Williams, Author of The Stranger You Seek    Baldwin and Alexiou have written a barn burner of a thriller. The reader is taken in from the first page to the last. The tension is maintained throughout the book with rare exception. Baldwin and Alexiou are defining the genre of romantic suspense within the lesbian genre with this series. You'll find yourself rushing to purchase the first three books in the series if you haven't already read them, or, if you have read them, wishing the authors would write the fifth in the series faster. - Pamela Bigelow, Lambdaliterary.org Baldwin and Alexiou have given their fans a gripping read that's difficult to put down!  Dying to Live has a complex plot with a pandemic created by an arch villain, and a rescue from Columbian guerrillas.  Zoe Anderson-Howe, the daughter of the owner of an English airline, has been captured by a Columbian guerrilla group and is being held for ransom.  In a fortunate coincidence, Fetch, an Elite Operative, has infiltrated the group in an effort to rescue their hostages.  What follows is a hair raising adventure as Fetch and Zoe try to escape from their brutal guards.  Meanwhile, the descriptions of the deadly virus which is sweeping the globe are truly frightening, and the Elite Operatives help in needed in determining how it started. Dying to Live  is the fourth book in the Elite Operatives Series.  One of the enjoyable things about this book is that all of the Elite Operatives from the previous novels play a role in this story, and readers have a chance to catch up on what's happening in their lives.  In addition, Baldwin and Alexiou just get better and better at creating exciting action while at the same time they fully develop their characters.  This is a thoroughly enjoyable read, and I can't wait for their next adventure!  - RLynne, Justaboutwrite.com DYING TO LIVE MISSING LYNX Missing Lynx is the latest in the Elite Operatives thriller series by Kim Baldwin and Xenia Alexiou. Even if you haven’t read the two previous offerings–Lethal Affairs and Thief of Always  (gotta love these 1960s style spy titles)—you can easily fall into this third installment.  Missing Lynx puts the thrill in thriller. Cassady Monroe, concert violinist and spy also known as Lynx, is only 25, but quite the prodigy. When a serial killer known as Headhunter, a grisly purveyor in the skin trade resurfaces, Cassady/Lynx must test her mettle on the case–her first real assignment for the Elite Operatives. In true thriller style, Baldwin and Alexiou take their women around the globe... from Vienna, all around the U.S. Southwest, on to New York, down to some of the most dangerous parts of Mexico, on to China and Vietnam and back to the Southwest. Quite the wild ride. But that’s what lends verisimilitude to this tale of the traffic in human beings.  Lynx hooks up with a mercenary during her journey and that relationship sends a sizzle through the story that is palpable. Heroine and anti-heroine. Quite the chemistry.  A dark, edgy, often grisly tale, Missing Lynx has the grit and pacing of a Bourne saga, but with highly engaging and thoroughly challenging female characters. Not for the faint hearted. - Victoria Brownworth, Lesbian Crime Fiction column, Lambdaliterary.org Kim Baldwin & Xenia Alexiou just get better and better at coming up with tightly written thrillers with plenty of 'seat of the pants' action.  Missing Lynx  is the third book in the Elite Operatives series.  As with the other books, it takes the reader across the globe from America to China and Viet Nam.  EOO Agent Lynx is sent after a serial killer who preys on beautiful young women.  Her hunt is complicated by a mercenary, Jack, who is after the same target.  As the two women search across the globe for 'The Headhunter', they explore their feelings for each other, their past, and their perceptions on their work.  It is when the two women discuss their work that Baldwin and Alexiou truly excel as they explore the motivations of money, security, good and evil. Missing Lynx is a roller coaster ride into the seamier side of life and the bonds which bind humans into trying to better the world.  This is a book which grips the reader until the final page! RLynne, Justaboutwrite.com BREAKING THE ICE Baldwin once again takes her readers to Alaska.  Life above the Arctic Circle, in the interior of Alaska is nothing like South Eastern Alaska, seen by most tourists.  Bryson Faulkner, a bush pilot, built her own cabin, runs her generator with wood she cuts herself, and shares her space with no one.  She's not sure anyone would want to share her isolation and endless wilderness.   Karla Edwards has come to Alaska to find a sister of whom she has just learned.  Karla is also escaping from her memories in Atlanta; within a short period of time her lover left, her mother died, and she discovered a sister.  Her journey to Alaska has become a journey of discovery, both of herself, and of the far north.   Baldwin has traveled to the Arctic Circle, and is able to show her readers her first hand experiences.  She describes the beauty of the country, the incredible silence that's only broken by the howl of a wolf, and the close knit community of people who live in the area. She shows how cut off from the "outside world" these people are, as Bryson returns from Fairbanks bringing much needed items: hemorrhoid cream, anti- fungal cream, tampons, orange juice, etc.  In this world, her characters rely on each other, and on their knowledge of the harsh climate.   Karla Edwards has flown into a world unlike any she has previously known.  Breaking the Ice tells about her adventure, and what she and Bryson discover about themselves and each other.  With vivid scenes, sexual tension, and gorgeous word pictures, this is a book that will glue you to your chair until the last page is turned. RLynne, Justaboutwrite.com THIEF OF ALWAYS Thief of Always is the second novel in the Elite Operatives series. The protagonist, Mishael Taylor, had a cameo role in the first novel, Lethal Affairs.  Thief of Always takes the reader to Venice and to Holland. Dutch countess Kristine Marie Louis van der Jagt has just inherited her father's rundown mansion, his pile of debts and the Blue Star Diamond. Mishael's assignment is to steal the diamond and return it to its owners, the Afghan government. In doing so, she must contend with Neo-Nazis, Afghan terrorists, and the beautiful troubled countess. Baldwin and Alexiou are skilled at fleshing out their characters and in describing the settings. Whether their protagonist is dodging bullets in Venice, Holland, or Afghanistan, their descriptions are accurate and take the reader into the action. Fast paced, with dazzling scenes that stir the heart of armchair travelers, Thief of Always grabs the reader on the first page and never lets go. Cameo appearances from Lethal Affairs' Domino only add to the fun. Thief of Always is a rich, wonderful read that leaves the reader anxiously awaiting the next book in the series. RLynne, Justaboutwrite.com LETHAL AFFAIRS Unexpected twists and turns, deadly action, complex characters and multiple subplots converge to make this book a gripping page turner. Elite Operative Domino has been trained as a hired assassin since she was a young girl. She is the consummate professional. Nothing in her life is personal until she meets journalist Hayley Ward-her next target. Hayley Ward has stumbled onto some highly classified information that can make her career, but if Domino doesn’t eliminate this perceived threat, someone else will. Lethal Affairs mixes political intrigue with romance, giving the reader an easy flowing and fast- moving story that never lets up.  A must-read, even though it has been out for a while. Thief of Always, the duo’s second, and equally good book in the Elite Operatives series, came out earlier this year. Kathi Isserman, Curve Magazine            Lethal Affairs is the first book in the Elite Operatives Series. It starts off with a bang, (pun intended), as Domino is cooped up in a hotel room in Istanbul. She is waiting to neutralize the founder of an extremist group which is causing grief for both American and U.N. Forces in Kuwait. This is the introduction to both Domino and the Elite Operatives Organization, (EOO), that Baldwin and Alexiou give to their readers. Few, if any, are better at creating tension, drama, and suspense than Kim Baldwin. Her attention to details, and her character building are incredible. In Lethal Affairs, Alexiou adds her voice, drawing the foreign born Domino as a complete contrast to the American investigative journalist Hayley Ward. Domino refers to Hayley as "an innocent," and so she is. Hayley just wants to become a respected investigative journalist for an important news agency. Domino has been raised to serve EOO, an organization in which she completely believes. As Hayley's and Domino's worlds cross, both women are put to a test which will require courage, brains, and the ability to improvise. Lethal Affairs is an exciting read, which definitely puts its reader on the edge of their seat. We can only hope that it is the first of a long series of books. RLynne, Justaboutwrite.com  To quote off the back cover: “Love is never more lethal!” is a fun way to sum up this fast-paced, action-packed thriller and first outing for newcomer, Xenia Alexiou, writing with her seasoned partner, Kim Baldwin. Who, if you read a great deal of lesbian fiction, has several action-packed novels already under her belt. Lethal Affairs is an excellent first outing for this pair of long- distance writers, collaborating on a new series that offers a great deal of fun, fast reads... ...Lethal Affairs holds up well...What keeps this one together is the deft writing well grounded in a sense of reality, the fully fleshed out corpulent characters (even the minor characters) including their personal foibles and weaknesses...hauls you along at such a well-constructed pace, that you just have to turn the page over and read the next chapter... ...Kim and Xenia did a fantastic job of pulling all the strands together, and giving us, the reader, a thoroughly credible thriller, laced with enough innuendo and romance to heat up all the action.  Over all, this one is up there with the best of them. Alexandra Wolfe, Kissed By Venus  Reviews of Dubbel Doelwit, the Dutch translation of Lethal Affairs: (Lethal Affairs) is a smoothly written action thriller which draws the reader into the life of special agent Domino. The plot surrounding Domino's secret mission is well constructed…the tension and emotional charge is built up to great heights, which makes it hard to put the book down. Equally admirable is the way in which the characters are given dimension. In most action- oriented (intrigue) fiction you won't find in-depth psychological portraits, but because of striking details, the characters become very real. As a cherry on top, the authors gift you a few sensual scenes which will leave you breathless. It's nice to know that (Lethal Affairs) is but the first entry in the Elite Operative Series. – The Flemish Magazine ZIZO The first entry in this new series shows a lot of promise. …the plot is very well constructed. And the developments between the two women, makes all of it even more exciting. When you read books in this genre, you know you will run into things that are unlikely. Thankfully it doesn't get out of control in (Lethal Affairs) and doesn't spoil the fun you will have reading it. Bring on the next book in the series! –Lesbischlezen.nl I loved (Lethal Affairs): a very exciting story about a "special agent" or actually a killer for hire. In this book you are simultaneously following the journalist who is looking for a good story and the story of a woman who wants to remain invisible and will go to almost any length to accomplish that. (Lethal Affairs) is therefore doubly exciting. It's a smooth read. –  VrowenThrillers.nl FOCUS OF DESIRE In a change of pace from her previous novels of suspense, Kim Baldwin has given her fans an intelligent romance, filled with delightful peeks at the lives of the rich and famous. Isabel Sterling is living a quiet life in Madison, WI, when her best friend enters her into the "Sophisticated Women Watch Your Dreams Come True" contest. The winner will get a make- over, as well as an all-paid trip for two to four wonderful locales. When Isabel wins the contest, it is only the idea of actually getting to travel to Paris, Rome, etc., that persuades her to accept. Naturally, her travel companion will be her best friend, Gillian. Natasha Kashnikova is a world-famous photographer whose camera can make or break a model. Her success has given her a jaded reaction to women; she knows they all want to be on the cover of a magazine and they will willingly perform to get there. Nearing her fortieth birthday, she's sure she has seen and done it all. Now Kash must pay back a favor by traveling with some Wisconsin innocent and capturing her make-over on film. Baldwin has done a wonderful job of delving into her two protagonists and showing how this seemingly simple trip creates life-changing experiences for both women. Isabel realizes that she has been "settling all this time. Settling for what and who was offered." Kash also takes a second look at her life and realizes that she, too, has settled for less than her dreams. As both women grow and change, the reader journeys into some of the hot dance clubs in Paris and Rome, and gets a front row seat to some very powerful sex scenes. Baldwin definitely proves that lust has gotten a bad rap. Focus of Desire is a great read, with humor, strong dialogue and heat. RLynne, Justaboutwrite.com FLIGHT RISK With each new book Kim Baldwin improves her craft and her storytelling. Flight Risk, her newest novel,  has heated action and vibrant depictions that make the reader feel as though she is right in the middle of the story. The author sustains the heightened suspense throughout the book, keeping our heart racing. Travel agent Blayne Keller witnesses a mob hit, and the mafia is trying to eliminate her so she will not testify. The local FBI in Chicago is charged with shielding her until she goes into the witness protection program, but there is a leak somewhere on the inside, and Blayne's life is clearly in danger. Beautiful elusive Alexi Nikolos, a WITSEC inspector, comes out of forced retirement to protect Blayne. Their first meeting is under unusual circumstances when the airplane they are both traveling on has a bomb on board that blows a big hole in the side. This event really kicks the novel into high gear. Flight Risk is fast moving with crisp dialogue and effective use of the characters' thoughts and emotions, and this reviewer could not put the book down. The author definitely did her background research because the criminal procedures are authentic and believable. As an added bonus, Baldwin builds sexual tension between the two main protagonists, but since Alexi takes her job of protecting Blayne seriously, we are kept on edge for most of the book. Baldwin, not known for highly erotic scenes in her  romances, does an excellent job of engaging all of the reader's senses with minimal graphic language. Baldwin outdid herself with Flight Risk. In this reviewer's opinion, it is her best storytelling to date. I highly recommend this thrilling story. Kathi Isserman, Justaboutwrite.com   Kim Baldwin’s fourth action-packed novel, Flight Risk, is a suspense and romance lover's dream. Blayne Keller and Alexi Nikolos are formidable opponents at first but their undeniable attraction, even under incredible circumstances, doesn’t diminish one’s hope for them to become allies, to survive against all odds, and to let love bloom. ...Hunter's Pursuit will always be special, but Flight Risk proves that this author is not a one-hit wonder. Baldwin balances action plot with romance. Her characters are rich and unique and each has a distinct ‘voice’, often rendering dialogue tags superfluous when distinguishing between Alexi and Blayne, yet Baldwin employs its use when appropriate. It’s a pleasure following Baldwin's career from Hunter's Pursuit, through the riveting adventures Force of Nature and Whitewater Rendezvous to Flight Risk. Her gift for writing action amidst romance becomes more evident with each endeavor and this reviewer looks forward to future projects penned by this fine author. Flight Risk is popular lesbian fiction at its best—it’s exciting, hot, and satisfying with a few surprises. Pick up a copy today. Focus of Desire is coming in October 2007. Cheri Rosenberg, Midwest Book Review Sexual tension runs through this tale of two women brought together by circumstance. Blayne Keller is a travel agent who witnesses a mafia murder and is thrust into the Federal Witness Protection Program to protect her. Agent Alexi Nikolos’ job is to keep Blayne alive, but passion complicates the matter as the two try to keep their objectives clear. The mob is determined to keep Blayne from testifying and ensnares another federal agent to play informant on her and Alexi, making it even more difficult to ensure their safety from the mafia and the continuation of their budding relationship. —Teresa Coates, Curve Magazine's Back to School: 100 Great Books to Buy, Vol 18#9 WHITEWATER RENDEZVOUS I enjoy a book that takes me on an adventure—both physical and emotional. Whitewater Rendezvous by Kim Baldwin does both. Once again, the author of Force of Nature, and the critically acclaimed Golden Crown Literary Award finalist, Hunter's Pursuit, has given her fans compelling characters amidst a breathtaking backdrop. The journey through the Alaskan waterways with its wildlife and fauna would make even a homebody feel like exploring nature. Baldwin does her homework, thus creating a believable setting, but it is the gorgeous, buff, and multi-talented tour guide, Chaz Herrick, who will have everyone booking their next trip. Even a workaholic TV network news big shot like Megan Maxwell can't help falling in love with the Northern Alaskan frontier and a certain someone she soon finds she can't live without. Baldwin sets up the longing between two admirable characters that can be equally stubborn. She then throws other obstacles in their way, which makes finding a resolution sweeter. The author draws the reader in by their senses, dazzling us with the landscape, feeding our desires a little bit at a time until the climax, where all inhibitions are obliterated. More importantly, Baldwin gives us pause to consider what's important, what's worth preserving in life, and it's not always fame and fortune. How can anyone compare the dirty yellow-gray air over Chicago with the vivid blue of the Arctic sky? Take a Whitewater Rendezvous, kayak along with the Broads in Broadcasting, and feel one with nature just as Megan learns to do because of an outdoors enthusiast who captures her heart and will capture yours too. You'll be putting your priorities in proper order before you know it or at the very least wishing you could. When it comes to romances, Whitewater Rendezvous by Kim Baldwin will leave you sated. The foreplay is excruciatingly exquisite, the sex completely satisfying and hot, and the resolution complete for a worthwhile read. I recommend it and hope to get to visit Alaska someday soon. There is way more than the caribou and grizzly bears that I hope to see there, that's for sure. Megan and Chaz may not seem to have much in common but read the book to find out if they have what it takes for a long-term relationship. Cheri Rosenberg, Midwest Book Review Kim Baldwin, the author of the riveting Hunter’s Pursuit, has given her fans another great story. Set in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Whitewater Rendezvous takes the reader on a wonderful wilderness adventure. Baldwin has faithfully described both the scenery in the Arctic, and the experience of kayaking in Level IV whitewater. Broads in Broadcasting are a group of Chicago women who work in various aspects of the media. Six of the women have booked a two week kayaking adventure on the “remote and scenic Odakonya River”. Included in the group is Megan Maxwell, the vice president of World News Central. As a woman in a powerful position, Megan has earned the nickname of Royal Ice Bitch. She’s only on this trip because she lost a bet after too many shots of tequila. Megan isn’t any happier after she meets their adventure guide, Chaz. Chaz Herrick is a dead ringer for Rita, Megan’s cheating ex. Baldwin has drawn her characters as well as she draws the setting. Megan and Chaz are both strong, knowledgeable women. The dynamics between the two of them are as stormy as the Arctic weather. Witty, sharp tongued, and attractive, both women keep the reader turning pages to see what happens. Whitewater Rendezvous is a definite keeper. With strong characters, grizzlies, storms, and stormy women, it’s the type of book that you’ll want in your collection. Look for it at your favorite lesbian bookstore. RLynne Watson, MegaScene Magazine Whitewater Rendezvous, set in the remote Odakonya River area of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, is the adventurous love story of two disparate and intensely dynamic women, Megan Maxwell and Chaz Herrick. Megan, the driven vice- president of World News Central television news, is known as the Royal Ice Bitch. It is a moniker not totally undeserving for the workaholic. Chaz, the attractive easygoing Alaskan tour guide, on the other hand, is content and treasures living apart from the raucous tumult of the general population. After these two intelligent, resolute, and witty women meet, Megan begins to think that perhaps losing that bet with her Chicago Broads in Broadcasting pals to join them for an Alaskan kayaking adventure may not be as disconcerting as she had thought. Matters are further complicated by harrowing Arctic storms, seemingly incompatible priorities, and the entertaining clash between two very tenacious and assertive women. Setting plays a key role in a well-crafted story of this type. Baldwin obviously knows her material, and with great care and skill, has transcribed the aura of an Arctic night sky and the grandeur of Alaskan isolation to the written page. The reader's senses are vividly awakened which allows that reader to become one with the environment— not always an easy task for an author to create. A hallmark of great writing is consummate characterization, and Whitewater Rendezvous does not disappoint. This novel is populated with round, not flat, characters. Each is delineated and developed with expertise and style. From the imagery to the diction to the syntax used, the personalities of the major characters are constructed in a credible, lucid, and realistic manner. Megan's workaholic focus is clearly articulated, making it simple for the reader to empathize. Chaz's free spirit is infectious, thus making it equally simple for the reader to identify with that desire to throw caution to the wind and escape. One aspect of Baldwin's writing is the absence of the stereotypical, and her characters in this story display that yet again. Whitewater Rendezvous captures the reader from the very first page. It totally immerses and envelops the reader in the Arctic experience. The novel deals with basic truths. What is important in life? Is there a soul mate somewhere out there for me? Can opposites truly attract? Superior chapter endings, stylishly and tightly written sentences, precise pacing, and exquisite narrative all coalesce to produce a novel of first-rate quality, both in concept and expression. Whitewater Rendezvous is Kim Baldwin's third novel. (Hunter's Pursuit and Force of Nature) The author's technique, range, and originality of composition continue to expand and flourish with each effort. This reviewer highly recommends Whitewater Rendezvous and eagerly looks forward to Baldwin's next novel, Flight Risk, to be published in February 2007. Arlene Germain, Midwest Book Review FORCE OF NATURE Heroes can be defined as women who do extraordinary acts in the face of danger and sometimes heroes are women who overcome adversity in their own lives. Kim Baldwin’s Force of Nature encompasses both kinds of heroes. Force of Nature begins with explosive action. Gable McCoy is working as a volunteer firefighter when she is caught outdoors with a twister barreling towards her. She narrowly escapes and when she emerges from the tornado, the scene all around her is devastation. This is when Gable meets Erin Richards who is trapped in her basement shower with no house left above her, just the remains of one. Gable spends a long night on the other side of the bathroom door comforting Erin as they wait for more help. Erin and Gable become fast friends after their shared experience. As they turn into best friends, Gable finds that she has more than friendly feelings toward Erin who has recently emerged from a bad marriage. Throughout this gripping story Gable fights these feelings until she can no longer contain her powerful emotions towards Erin. As I read Force of Nature non-stop from beginning to end, the story had me on the edge of my seat with the multiple action scenes of firestorms and heroic rescues. They are descriptive, visual, and I could even feel and smell the twister coming. Throughout these search and rescue efforts, Baldwin shows Gable’s continuing struggle to deny her attraction to Erin. Gable’s aching desire and her attempts to hide her sexual orientation from Erin, for fear of losing their friendship, are convincing. Force of Nature has rapid-fire search and rescue scenes, and Baldwin gives the reader good insight into firefighting throughout the story. She blends the romance into the plot so it complements rather than detracts from the action while building Gable’s angst so that we as the reader suffer along with Gable as she hides her torturous secret. The ending is potent and heroic while giving us sweet release. With Force of Nature Kim Baldwin has created another compelling read filled with multiple conflicts that interconnect well. With only her second novel, she is fast becoming a force as a lesbian fiction author. Kathi Isserman, Independent Gay Writer Force of Nature delivers in more ways than one. From the very start, Baldwin throws the reader straight into the action as volunteer firefighter Gable McCoy, still on her one-year probation period as a volunteer with the Plainfield Township Fire Department almost literally drives into the force of a tornado. ...Force of Nature is filled with nonstop, fast paced action. Tornadoes, raging fire blazes, heroic and daring rescues… Baldwin does a fine job of describing the fast-paced scenes and inspiring the reader to keep on turning the pages. Also obvious is the writer's love of nature, and the fact that Kim Baldwin herself lives in a cabin surrounded by acres of forest and woods is patently obvious through her descriptive narrative. The dialogue is easy to read and flows well. It's also a plus when the reader gets to learn new facts about something they might not have known before—in this instance, firefighting. Force of Nature is a romance, and at that a perfectly enjoyable one. As the tag line says— Wind. Fire. Ice. Love. It's got all of those elements, and more. Plus, of course, heroic women in firefighting uniforms… Lynne Jamneck, Llife Literature After wowing readers with last year's thriller, HUNTER'S PURSUIT, Kim Baldwin's follow-up is a romance. But it's a romance book-ended by scenes with thriller qualities, starting with a twister. Forty-six year old Gable McCoy is employed at a pharmacy and works as a volunteer firefighter for Plainfield Township, Michigan. One evening, when her corner of the county is hit with bad weather culminating in tornados touching down, she sets out to help those in her assigned area. Little does she know that the storm will literally touch her life. ...Though Gable's life is spared, the house of a nearby resident is destroyed. When Gable gets to the decimated ruins, she can't believe anyone could still be alive. But Erin Richards did survive and is trapped in the basement bathroom. Unfortunately, Gable can't get to her. But they can still talk through the wreckage, and that they do-most of the night. Sight unseen, the two women form quite an attachment, and their friendship begins from there. Baldwin writes great action scenes throughout with just the right balance between plot tension and the character's internal thoughts. Her descriptions of the training, fire, and rescue efforts are terrific. The ups and downs of the two characters' relationship occur in a natural, yet not entirely predictable, progression. Just like a twister or a forest fires, you're never quite sure what direction Gable and Erin will go. Will they play it safe? Or give in to passion? Highly recommended to all who enjoy a good romance with rescue/action interspersed. Lori L. Lake, Midwest Book Review Kim Baldwin, Golden Crown Literary Society Award finalist for her outstanding action adventure debut novel, Hunter’s Pursuit, has written a charming romance that will equally delight her fans. Force of Nature, set in rural Michigan where tornadoes and other natural disasters abound, packs an emotional wallop. Author Lori L. Lake writes, “There's something about it that's just Real – and vastly satisfying.” Gable McCoy is a pharmacist by profession and, because of her commitment to public service, is a volunteer firefighter for the Plainfield Township Fire Department. The forty-six year old embarks on a full-out mobilization of the county’s search and rescue squad due to an impending tornado. After nearly succumbing to the disaster, Gable manages to avoid harm when she meets Erin Richards, a divorced, thirty-nine year old music teacher, trapped in the basement of her destroyed home. Baldwin’s authentic dialogue and brilliant descriptions of the setting makes it easy to visualize being there – soaked, freezing, scared but brave – while intimately learning about the characters as they get to know each other during a long, dark, and stormy night. The sign of a gifted writer, besides drawing her readers in with a fascinating tale, is being able to describe an event (catastrophic or otherwise) so vividly that the reader can feel it, taste it, hear it, smell it, and see it, even if she has never experienced these circumstances prior to reading the novel. ... Kim Baldwin adeptly depicts the fictional world with sharpness to rival the real world, writing realistic action, emotion, and descriptions in every scene. Baldwin is also adept at characterization and develops interesting character arcs explicitly. It’s easy to get into the character’s head to see exactly where they are coming from, what they are feeling, what makes them tick, and how life’s events and their own maturation changes them. ...Life threatening tornadoes and fires are not the only forces of nature to affect these two admirable women. Internal conflicts can also stand in the way of true happiness. Erin goes through a major transformation as she discovers things about herself she never thought about until she met Gable and works through the demons of her past. Readers who take pleasure in courtship, appreciate characters who work through their angst, have a soft spot in their hearts for romance, and lust for adventure, will enjoy Kim Baldwin’s five star novel, Force of Nature. Even if a person has never inhaled smoke from a fire, or lived through a natural disaster, Baldwin writes it in such a way that it’s very easy to imagine exactly what it must be like. Cheri Rosenberg, Midwest Book Review Kim Baldwin returns with her second novel, Force of Nature, which is distinctly different from her award-winning debut work, Hunter's Pursuit. The wonderfully entertaining Pursuit was primarily an action/thriller with the focal point being the one main character's skill in survival at any cost. Force of Nature is action-packed, has fast-paced thrilling rescue scenes, but here the author has chosen to focus her character development on the two main characters. Gable McCoy is a forty-six year-old pharmacist who is also in her rookie year as a volunteer firefighter in a rural Michigan community. After having survived a tornado, she begins her task of search and rescue in the area. She comes upon the devastated home of Erin Richards, a thirty-nine year-old teacher who has recently moved to the area. Erin is alive but unfortunately trapped in her basement bathroom. Completely surrounded by debris, Gable must await other rescuers before extricating Erin and taking her to safety. Throughout the long night, Gable keeps Erin occupied with conversational anecdotes and mutual family histories. This is no easy task since Erin is both claustrophobic and has a fear of the dark. However, as the hours wear on, a friendship develops, which, unbeknownst to either woman, will face even greater challenges as their story progresses. Baldwin has a natural gift for creating a scene and immediately immersing the reader. Compelled by the tumultuous tornadic winds, both Gable and the reader hit that three-foot wide drainpipe just in time to escape almost certain death. "It was upon her in an instant, trying to suck her from the pipe, tugging at her with fierce determination" (p. 15). The reader can feel the vacuum inside that pipe, can experience the hands sliding helplessly along the narrow algae-covered walls, and can feel the pelting stones and sticks as they assault the exposed legs. The reality of the situation is skillfully conveyed through the concise syntax and expert word choice. Another hallmark of this novel is the manner in which Baldwin takes the mundane and prosaic events of everyday living and juxtaposes them with that thankfully rare catastrophic natural occurrence. These are ordinary women with jobs and lives; they are not superheroes in any way, and this very credible casting delivers much more of an impact for the reader. The suspension of disbelief is admirably achieved. It is also refreshing to read a novel where comely twenty-somethings are not cavorting across the chapters. Both Gable and Erin are attractive, professional, and responsible older women. That the author has chosen to write about this demographic is much appreciated by this reader. Creating the uncertainty about Erin's sexual identity and developing the necessary sexual tension between these two main characters could very easily have lent itself to the tried and cliche coming-out experience. However, Baldwin surpasses this hurdle with wonderfully humorous exchanges of dialogue. She has a gift for creating resonant and realistic conversations among her various characters as well as a genuine sense of what genuinely coincides with any given situation. There are many conflicts presented throughout the course of the novel, but Baldwin offers clear and appealing resolutions for all. Force of Nature is an exciting and substantial reading experience which will long remain with the reader. Likeable characters with plausible problems and concerns, imaginative settings, engrossing events, and a well-tailored writing style all contribute to an exceptional novel. Baldwin's characterization is acutely and meticulously circumscribed and expansive. It is indeed gratifying to see a new author attempt and succeed in expanding her literary technique and writing style. Kim Baldwin is an author who has achieved both in Force of Nature. Arlene German, Midwest Book Review HUNTER’S PURSUIT Kim Baldwin’s novel, Hunter’s Pursuit, Author’s Edition, is set during a raging blizzard in the northern Michigan wilderness just a few miles south of Lake Superior. Living in a secluded bunker is Kat Hunter, an introspective, solitary, and lethal woman who is contemplating retirement from her job as a paid assassin. Determined to bury the past, she has forsaken her violent world and former associates. However, her tranquil days of music and photography are interrupted when she rescues a mysterious woman from a serious car accident. Upon bringing the woman back to the bunker, Kat discovers that the woman has no recollection of who she is. To further complicate the situation, there are several nefarious and ruthless people who are doggedly pursuing Kat for the million-dollar dead-or-alive bounty which has been offered by the one individual who knows Kat all too well. As the storm rages outside her hideaway, Kat will be tested as never before, and along the way, she will awaken feelings she thought were long dead. Baldwin has created a gripping, fast-paced, and suspenseful wilderness adventure that reads easily and enjoyably. The two main characters, Kat and the injured amnesiac, Jake, are intelligent and appealing. The deft characterization displays the multi-faceted personality of the charismatic protagonist, Kat. As the reader begins to peel away each layer and proceeds to uncover the events that have molded Kat into the woman she has become, the reader is subtly made aware that nothing should be taken at face value. Jake is a character that immediately evokes one’s concern and sympathy, yet Baldwin always manages to keep the presence of mystery and inscrutability in the forefront. Is Jake who she appears to be? Could she be a ruse perpetrated by Kat’s enemies? Does she know Kat’s Achilles’ heel? Baldwin has indeed created memorably inventive and compelling characters. In the hands of an author with a less stylized technique, Kat could have come across as an extremely unsympathetic character who had committed despicable acts. However, through the use of fluid substantive dialogue and an impressive narrative depicting the inner conflicts of this main character, Baldwin has succeeded in creating a very realistic portrayal of a woman who displays, despite all odds, an intrinsic decency and compassion. It is for those very reasons that the reader genuinely cares for and about her. This novel has some of the best action sequences this reader has experienced. They are animated, vigorous, and exciting. The reader can virtually experience the sensory world of the somber winter and its uninhabited forest. Baldwin’s fast-paced sentence structure effortlessly sweeps the reader along at practically breakneck speed. The chapter endings make wonderful use of the familiar cliffhanger technique. Baldwin’s chapter conclusions are extremely precise and definitely suspenseful. The juxtaposition of various plotlines, the evolving focal points of reader interest, and the realistic dialogue hurtle the reader forward at an ever increasing rate. Hunter’s Pursuit is most definitely a page turner. Kim Baldwin’s novel, Hunter’s Pursuit, Author’s Edition, takes the reader on a dangerous, heart-pounding rollercoaster ride brimming with intrigue, betrayal, deliverance, passion, and ultimately, self-less love. From the stark setting to the character of the anti-heroine to the possibilities of redemption, Baldwin has managed to write a novel which is memorable not only for its energetic detail but also for its appealing and perceptive portrayal of a woman conditioned, but not held captive, by her past. Arlene Germain, Outlook Press  Hunter's Pursuit is a ".... fierce first novel, an action-packed thriller pitting deadly professional killers against each other. Baldwin's fast-paced plot comes ... leavened, as every intelligent adventure novel's excesses ought to be, with some lovin'. Even as she fends off her killers, Kat finds the woman she wants by her side - and in her bed." Richard Labonte, Q Syndiate Bookmarks "A riveting novel of suspense" seems to be a very overworked phrase. However, it is extremely apt when discussing Kim Baldwin's Hunter's Pursuit. ...Hunter's Pursuit is an exciting page turner. Just when you think Hunter is out of danger, something, or someone, new pops up. The setting alone is dramatic; the earth shelter bunker Hunter created is seemingly impenetrable. She has everything she needs, with security cameras, food, and electricity. And yet. . .I won't spoil your read. Look for this excellent novel of suspense... Hunter's Pursuit by Kim Baldwin has been nominated for a Golden Crown Literary Society Award for 2005 and deservedly so. It is a truly fascinating, five star, entertaining read in one of the best action/adventure/mystery novels I've read this year. Don't miss it! I have added Kim Baldwin to my list of favorite authors. I am looking forward to reading her new romance novel, Force of Nature, and anything else penned by this talented novelist. Cheri Rosenberg, Justaboutwrite.com Hidden away in an icy fortress, in a snow-encrusted bunker dug deep into a hillside in the Michigan woods, Kat “Hunter” Demitrious waits. Now in her mid-30s, she has been taking time to reflect upon all the havoc she has wreaked in her career as a hired assassin and bounty hunter. She has committed a lot of reprehensible acts—done things that few people would ever forgive, least of all herself. Even after having walked away five years earlier from her violent life, she is still in danger because someone—most likely her former employer—has put out a million-dollar contract on her life. So Hunter is not safe at all, and her life is suddenly in grave danger when she is out in the woods deer hunting one day, and her newfound compassion causes her to stop on a lonely road and help a car crash victim who turns out to have been traveling in a stolen car. The woman Hunter takes in “looked to be about twenty-five, ten years younger than Hunter, and she was probably quite attractive, but it was hard to tell for sure at the moment. Bandages hid much of her face and the areas that were exposed were puffy and bruised. Her nose had been broken, blackening both eyes, and there was a small lump behind one ear. Her shoulder-length blond hair was matted with dried blood, and a three-inch gash on her forehead had been closed with several neat stitches of dental floss. Her left arm was set with a makeshift splint, her left knee was wrapped in an Ace bandage and her rib cage had been tightly taped” (p. 11). “Jake” finds herself in that beat-up situation when she wakes up in a dark place, attended by a strange woman, and unable to remember her name or how she came there. She cannot recall anything about her past, but she feels certain she knows Hunter, who is in turn quite sure she has never met Jake. The injured woman’s certainty that she recognizes Hunter seems to furnish proof that Jake is the bounty hunter gunning for her, and this makes things difficult because in the scant amount of time the two women spend together, an attraction catches hold and sparks begin to fly. But HUNTER’S PURSUIT is not primarily a romance, though it contains a romantic sub-plot. After the initial setup, the bulk of the book is action-adventure as Hunter tries to escape detection by other bounty hunters, all of whom want the million dollar prize. Unlike her past solitude, however, Hunter now has the injured Jake to defend, and as every hour goes by, Hunter grows more determined to protect her. The story is full of twists and turns, suspense, and a deepening mystery that is not resolved until the final couple chapters. Who is after Hunter? Who is Jake? Can they trust one another? The writing is crisp, especially as the tension mounts in the second half of the book. HUNTER’S PURSUIT is a terrific action/thriller from a promising new writer, and I highly recommend the story. Lori L. Lake, Midwest Book Review Kim Baldwin Vivid depiction of life and a fascinating look at life in a remote Alaskan village. Bettles is the small dot located above the Arctic Circle and when the land is not frozen is only accessible via the air. With twenty-four residents, all are dependent on each other for existence and entertainment. Bryson Faulkner is forty years old and lives on her own in her remote cabin north of Bettles. She absolutely loves her life, when not ferrying goods or people to and from remote locations to Bettles or Fairbanks, she can kick back and read and enjoy the gorgeous scenery. A native of Alaska, she has followed the same career as her father. The one thing she would like to add would be someone to share it with. But in the remote location she has chosen, her options are few and she isn't interested in settling for less than the right thing. Bryson is wonderfully self- confident, a good person and friend to all who know her. Into her life crashes thirty-five-year-old Karla Edwards, an ER nurse from hot humid Atlanta, Georgia. Karla's life in the last two months has been turned upside down and inside out, and at this point, there is nothing permanent or steady for her. In other words they couldn't be more different. Outwardly at least. The author gives the reader a good time bringing these separate elements together and blending them into a fun frozen treat. Elaine Mulligan, Justaboutwrite.com
